Challenge

In 2013, Astronics Corporation, a leader in aerospace and defense markets, contracted SDG Systems to design a native Android application to interface with an unexploded ordnance (UXO) detection cart, a device that locates dormant explosive weapons that pose a risk of detonation. The application needed to give live feedback to the operator about the presence of UXOs and a visual indication of areas that the cart had already covered. Because they didn’t have access to the cart, SDG engineers developed the application through simulation and iteration with the Astronics team.

Solution

  • A USB-serial driver allows the user to fully control and communicate with the UXO cart using a custom serial communication specification.
  • The user interface provides live, direct feedback from the cart to the user.
  • Full-screen kiosk mode prevents the user from exiting the application and ‘locking down’ the remainder of the Android user interface.

Impact

  • A controlled UXO detection cart. Users control the cart remotely but with precision.
  • Accurate RS232-over-USB communication. A Juno T41 rugged device communicates with the cart by using a RS232-over-USB interface.

Astronics’ lead on the project, Jason Clark, spoke highly of the SDG team: “I am impressed by and pleased to be working with your team. SDG Systems delivered the solution to Astronics using the Juno T41 running Android. The UXO cart and controller is being deployed to war-torn regions, successfully fulfilling its purpose.
